Chapter 10
Harlow
We were both reluctant to leave the next day and took our time putting the cabin back together and getting ready to go. Our boots had been left out by the pond the day before, so I had to pull out some older boots that I no longer wore so that we could both go retrieve them where they sat frozen by the bench on the edge of the pond, forgotten in our panic the day before. The hole where I had fallen through was mostly frozen over again, but you could still see the jagged edges where it was.
We spent the day quietly working next to each other, getting the farm ready for the next day. There were trees to cut down to refill the lot and we spent time sharpening the saws and making sure everything was sorted. By the time we were done, it was only halfway through the afternoon, but neither of us made moves to do something together afterwards. I said goodbye and headed back to the cabin and Dakota went inside the house. Charlie seemed to be a little confused as to what was happening but followed me back to the cabin.
I moped around the rest of the day trying not to feel sorry for myself and remembering that he wasnât saying no. He was just asking for some space to think. He deserved that. I should happily let him have that, but there was something that just made me sad about it. That time in the cabin had been some of the best moments of my life, aside from the almost dying part of course. I had gone to the city plenty of times and had hookups, but it had mostly been in random bar bathrooms with someone I didnât even knowing their names.
What Dakota and I had shared yesterday was something different. Something special. I had never had someone look at me with so much lust and want in their eyes, or care for me so wonderfully. Even if we hadnât had sex, that time together would have been special, but with the sex, it had completely blown my mind. How could he possibly not think that the two of us were meant for each other. For me, there was nowhere else I wanted to be but with him. And no one I wanted to be with except for him. I just hoped that wherever his head was at right now, he could come around and get there too.
At dinner time, I tried to recreate his peanut ramen noodle dish and failed spectacularly. I had no idea you could ruin peanut butter so completely but somehow it ended up chunky, way too salty and tasting a little burnt. I ate it anyways. I heard my phone ping from where it was plugged in across the room but ignored it. It was probably my dad checking in to see how things were going and I didntâ think I could talk to him right now.
